Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the auspicious start of Diwali. Falling on October 29, 2024, this day is a symbol of wealth, health, and prosperity, honoring Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera (the god of wealth), and Lord Dhanvantari (the god of medicine and healing). According to Hindu tradition, it is an ideal day to buy gold, silver, and household items, symbolizing blessings of abundance.

Significance of Dhanteras

The festival is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. One legend describes Lord Dhanvantari’s appearance during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), carrying the nectar of immortality. This day is also associated with health, with families performing rituals to keep illnesses at bay. Another tale speaks of the protective light used by King Hima’s son’s wife, which ultimately saved his life from the god of death, Yamraj. For this reason, lamps (diyas) are lit on Dhanteras as a shield against negative energies.
